On this day in 1968, Peter Grant finalised a deal to sign Led Zeppelin to Atlantic Records after Dusty Springfield recommended Jimmy Page to the label manager. This is arguably one of the most important days in music history and the legacy Led Zeppelin have left behind is timeless. You’d be hard pushed to describe even your favourite band as ‘flawless’ and can easily pick out songs that are definitely weaker but in their short time, Led Zeppelin didn’t have any weak songs, any that threatened their career.
Led Zeppelin were one of the most enigmatic, talented and unique bands around when they started. Then again, that hasn’t changed much. I can’t think of a band that comes close to what Led Zeppelin were, any band that’s truly replaced the hole that Zeppelin left behind and that’s because it can’t be recaptured. Even if you were to replicate them note-for-note and sound exactly like them, the magic of Led Zeppelin can never and will never be recaptured.
